Our History

Hibbs Excavating & Grading has been serving Des Moines and its surrounding communities for over 40 years. We have been a family run company since 1980 when Larry and Kum Hibbs started it.

Larry’s grandfather, Pat Kellar, was an excavating contractor years ago when he used a team of mules and a slip. Eventually, he bought the first Caterpillar loader in Des Moines. All Pat’s sons worked for him.

One of Larry’s uncles gave him his first job out of the Army. He learned to use a shovel, following a tractor. After a while, he started running tractors and really learning the business.

The business started in 1980 in residential home building. Both of Larry’s sons, Tony and David, got involved and learned the business as well. In 2006, David, and his wife Kristi, took over ownership and has moved the business into the future, now taking on commercial projects as well. Now their two sons, Justin and Carter, are now working with the business and looking to take Hibbs Excavating & Grading to new heights.

We are committed to building relationships with our customers. We want to be your first choice for any commercial or residential project that you need completed.
